Free MLB Picks Monday August 14, 2023

I’m going for the jugular with a MLB bet on a big underdog for today, Monday August 14. I’m Professor MJ, a 15-year university statistics teacher. Are you ready for this?

 

SYSTEM PICK #1: Los Angeles Angels (@ +160 odds, at Texas Rangers)

My top pick in Major League Baseball for August 14 is the Los Angeles Angels full game moneyline. They will be playing in Arlington, Texas for the first game of a three-game series. The projected starters are Patrick Sandoval and Max Scherzer. Let me explain why I took this bet.

I’m aware that the Angels have not been doing great lately. In fact, they have won just three of their past 12 games. However, during this rough stretch they have only faced teams with a winning record: Atlanta, Seattle, San Franciso and Houston.

Patrick Sandoval is having an average year; not bad, not great either. It’s worth nothing, though, that he has fared much better of late. Indeed, he has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his past five outings. During this solid run, he posted an astounding 1.86 ERA.

Sandoval has also done a fine job throughout his career against the Rangers. In six appearances, he has surrendered 10 earned runs in 29 1/3 innings, which translates into a 3.07 ERA.

On the other side, the Rangers will start Max Scherzer. He is obviously a very reliable hurler, but he’s not invincible either. Opponents have scored three runs or more against him in 4 of his past 7 outings. Could the Angels do some damage against him? Why not? L.A. has scored the 9th most points in the Big Leagues this season.

I know the Rangers are a good team, but I feel like this line is too high. This is a divisional game that I expect to be tight. The betting public will likely support Texas since they are the stronger team, they are at home and they have a big-name starter on the mound. To me, there is some value with the Angels so I’m going to take a shot at it!
